KAOLIN

Kaolin is a rock composed mainly of kaolinite, one of the most widespread minerals in the Earth’s crust.
Naturally white or grayish, this soft-looking mineral is widely used in many industrial processes.

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF KAOLIN?

Kaolin is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of kaolinite, an alumino-silicate mineral belonging to the clay family.

It forms through weathering processes caused by water on existing rocks. Once extracted and processed, it appears as a soft, earthy, and powdery substance. Its typical color is white to gray (hence its common name “white clay”), though it may appear orange or reddish due to variable iron oxide content.

There are different types of kaolin depending on their intended use; in agriculture, bright white kaolins are preferred.

WHAT ARE THE APPLICATIONS OF KAOLIN IN AGRICULTURE?

Its white coating increases the reflection of solar radiation, helping to reduce sunburn damage and lowering the average temperature on fruits and leaves (by approximately 3–5°C).

Additionally, it forms a protective layer on the plant that disrupts and hinders the behavior of phytophagous insects, exerting an indirect physical effect on their development.

Thanks to its multiple benefits, kaolin is highly valued in agriculture. By combining its protective effects, it also contributes to improving crop quality.

Kaolin offers technical advantages that help counteract the effects of climate change, enabling plants to withstand extreme conditions. For farmers, it represents a simple yet highly effective technical solution.

Kaolin is easily removed both before and after harvest. It allows for the transmission of the wavelengths required for photosynthesis, while partially filtering ultraviolet and infrared rays, without interfering with the plant’s gas exchange.

BAL-CO GREENLINE KAOLIN

Thanks to our extensive experience working alongside agricultural professionals, we have developed a range of kaolin-based products tailored to a variety of needs.

Our kaolins are available in different micronization grades and offer excellent adhesion to both leaves and fruit. Their characteristic bright white color reflects solar radiation and helps prevent sunburn.
